L. F. Hobley The Farmer London Allman & Son 1972 0-204-74668-X / 9780204746683 First Laminated Hard Cover Very Good History 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" No dj. Some bumping to either end of spine and to the corners. Previous owner's name neatly inscribed to top left hand corner of opening page. 96 pages including an index, black and white photographs and line drawings interspersed amongst the text. In this book, L. F. Hobley tells the absorbing story of farming in Britain from the arrival of Neolithic Man in about 3000 B.C. right up to the present day (1972) with its large-scale methods of growing crops and scientific rearing of animals. In talking about the great improvements which each century brought and the changes in our countryside as more and more land was needed for cultivation, the author also tries to describe what the life of a farner was, and is, really like: its hardships, struggles and often monotonous day-to-day activities.

Margaret Escott Show Down New Zealand Auckland University Press 1973 Second Edition-Reprint from 1936 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Keith Guyan Edited and introduced by Robert Goodman, this book was first published in 1936 when it was very favourably reviewed both in London and New York, however with its reputation being so high it was decided it was very worthy of republication. The setting is Auckland and the dairying country of Waikato. The landscape, the climate, and the farming routine are strongly evoked, but it is the subtety and force with which the burgeoning and dying of a marriage are related which makes this novel memorable. Miss Escott was the first living author to be represented in the New Zealand Fiction series. the book is clean, bright and tidy and the cover is good, being slightly rubbed back corner and edge with one very tiny teat to bottom back. top edge slightly worn as is top of spine. small crease bottom front., otherwise neat. the cover shows an excellent piece of artwork by Keith Guyan based on a photograph supplied by Auckland Public Library. there are two small stains inside front cover and a pencil price has been rubbed out.
