Katy Payne Silent Thunder: The Hidden Voice of Elephants London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 1998 0-297-84265-X / 9780297842651 First Hard Back Near Fine Near Fine Natural history/biography 9 1/2'' x 6 1/2'' Binding is dark brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine; 288 pages. Katy Payne's decade of research on whales had introduced her to the infrasonic calls of the great fin and blue whale; these and her involvement in music had made her familiar with the physical sensation that accompanies powerful low-frequency sound. When she noticed a throbbing near the elephant cage in an American zoo, it occured to her that elephants too might be making calls too deep for humans to hear. Her guess was confirmed when she and two colleagues recorded elephants using infrasound-capable equipment. The discovery of a hitherto unsuspected range of communication for land animals opened the opportunity for her and a shifting array of associates to spend a dozen years studying elephants in Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe. What began as curiosity turned to obsesseion as katy Payne came to know individual elephant families. She was able to record the calls with which elephants express their tremendous concerns for one another, and gathered evidence about how these function over long distances in the coordination of their behaviour. In the course of her work she experienced many heart warming encounters with African people and became aware of the forces that threaten their culture and elephants' lives.
