A very good copy of this book which is complete with its EP record in a sleeve to the inner board. The record is still in it's original plastic cover and is placed inside a record sleeve , attached to the book. The record is in excellent condition. The sleeve has opened slightly along the bottom edge. The book has a tiny sign of shelf wear to the top edge near the spine, otherwise the edges are undamaged and the corners are sharp. 23 clean pages with some lovely photographs of Theresa the Lyrebird, and the story of how the authoe got to know this timid , wild little bird. Side one of the record has recordings of 1. - Superb Lyrebird -calling in the deep forest and 2. -Albert Lyrebird side two has 15 recordings of the Lyrebirds imitations and no 16 is a selection of ' how many of the Superb Lyrebird's imitations you can recognize '.

Katy Payne's decade of research on whales had introduced her to the infrasonic calls of the great fin and blue whale; these and her involvement in music had made her familiar with the physical sensation that accompanies powerful low-frequency sound. When she noticed a throbbing near the elephant cage in an American zoo, it occured to her that elephants too might be making calls too deep for humans to hear. Her guess was confirmed when she and two colleagues recorded elephants using infrasound-capable equipment. The discovery of a hitherto unsuspected range of communication for land animals opened the opportunity for her and a shifting array of associates to spend a dozen years studying elephants in Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe. What began as curiosity turned to obsesseion as katy Payne came to know individual elephant families. She was able to record the calls with which elephants express their tremendous concerns for one another, and gathered evidence about how these function over long distances in the coordination of their behaviour. In the course of her work she experienced many heart warming encounters with African people and became aware of the forces that threaten their culture and elephants' lives.

Full colour cover showing a photo of a hedgehog in the wild. Black and white photos internally , showing hedgehog babies , both in the wild and being hand fed , plus many , many other fabulous pictures of these delightfully shy animals , with text to accompany the photographs. There is a tiny set of initials to the bottom of the first inner page.
