Claude Baudez and Sydney Picasso Lost Cities of the Maya London Thames & Hudson 1992 0-500-30009-7 / 9780500300091 Soft Cover Near Fine History 7 " x 5" 175 pages including the index. Buried deep in the Central American jungle, the mysterious ruined metropolises of the Maya were a source of wonder to the early explorers who stumbled across them: were these extraordinary pyramids and palaces the work of gods or men? For three long centuries the mystery only deepened; but as artists, photographers and archaeologists gradually pieced together the whole picture, romantic conjecture gave way to scientific fact - and the true inhabitants of these elaborate sites were finally revealed.

David E. Johnston The Channel Islands: An Archaeological Guide Chichester, UK Phillimore 1981 0-85033-395-4 / 9780850333954 First Hard Back Fine Near Fine Archaeology 9 1/2'' x 7'' Unread copy - as new. Binding is grey cloth, with gilt lettering on spine; 144 pages including the index and a section of black and white photographs. Dj price-clipped, otherwise fine. This important new work fills the need, that has been growing for the past several decades, for a new, full survey of the archaeology of the Channel islands. Since the last outline was published, in 1939, intensive research in Southern Britain, mainland France and particularly in the Islands themselves, has greatly changed the picture. The book includes a brief historical account of archaeological research in the Islands, from the pioneer work of the Lukis family at the beginning of the 19th century to the current achievements of the Societies of the four principal Islands. It began as a survey of the prehistoric monuments, at the suggestion of these Societies, and has been written in consultation with them.

David E. Johnston (editor) Ilid Anthony, James Dyer, Leslie Grinsell, David E. Johnston, Barry M. Marsden, Edward Sammes Discovering Roman Britain Aylesbury Shire Publications 1983 0-85263-627-X / 9780852636275 First British Paperback Mass Market Paperback Very Good History 160 pages including the index. There is a a diagonal crease to the top right hand side of the book and some minor shelfwear, otherwise bright and clean. This book is a comprehensive visitors' guide to Roman Britain. It is based on the descriptions of the Roman sites originally published in the nine books of the "Discovering Regional Archaeology" series covering England and Wales. But it is much more than a reissue of old texts, for the original authors have revisited all the sites, rewritten the entries and added new ones, and the geographical range has been extended to include Scotland and the Channel Islands. David E. Johnston, Staff Tutor in Archaeology in the Department of Adult Education, Southampton University, has written a new introductory section including a historical outline of Roman Britain and a description of the various types of site included, thus setting the scene for the gazetteer of sites which follows. The English and Welsh sites are arranged by counties in alphabetical order, with a special section on Hadrian's Wall. Then follow the Scottish sites, including a section on the Antinine Wall, and finally the only two Roman sites in the Channel islands. Major sites include towns, fortresses, temples and villas. Rural settlements and landscape features such as Celtic fields and roads are noted where the remains repay a visit. Less familiar items like Roman barrows, mausolea, practice camps and canals are included, as well as hillforts that were occupied during the Roman period. National grid references and directions for finding the sites are given.
