Astonished to find that no unbiased account had ever been published of the lives of the most notorious folk heroes of the 1930s, John Treherne set about sifting through the mass of conflicting evidence; he travelled to America to interview surviving eye-witnesses and anyone else who could throw a clear light on Bonnie and Clyde. He also examined the whole process of myth-making and its importance in a world of science and technology.
