This important new work fills the need, that has been growing for the past several decades, for a new, full survey of the archaeology of the Channel islands. Since the last outline was published, in 1939, intensive research in Southern Britain, mainland France and particularly in the Islands themselves, has greatly changed the picture. The book includes a brief historical account of archaeological research in the Islands, from the pioneer work of the Lukis family at the beginning of the 19th century to the current achievements of the Societies of the four principal Islands. It began as a survey of the prehistoric monuments, at the suggestion of these Societies, and has been written in consultation with them.
