The handicapped baby may take longer to pass through the same stages, and he may require extra help and stimulation to acquire motor skills, communication and self-help skills. But like the normal child, his subsequent development will all be based on his early learning, and the rate of that learning will at least partly depend, the authors believe, on the help he gets in his first year.
