1 Helen Ashton William and Dorothy: a Novel of the Wordsworths
London Collins 1974 Hard Cover Very Good  Very Good Cover: Alan Burton
DJ has suffered some wear at both the top and bottom of the spine, particularly the top where there are a couple of small pieces missing. Other than than the dj is sound and hardly worn at all. Now protected inside a cover. The book is very good, with clean, tight pages. In this celebrated novel, first published in 1938, Helen Ashton brings to life in the form of fiction the poet Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy and the circle in which they lived, a circle that included Coleridge and Lamb and Walter Scott. The book is in no sense just a period piece. To it Miss Ashton brought all her gifts as a novelist. It is essentially a story of human relationships. Ít seems to me,' the author wrote, 'that they were all quite modern in their attitudes and behaviour. That is why they interest me so much.' The central character in the novel is not the poet himself but his sister Dorothy. and the main theme is Dorothy's love for Coleridge. This is a matter on which critics have never been able to agree. Miss Ashton holds that no woman could be in any doubt about it, and that Dorothy's fiery, tortured and unrequited love for Coleridge, though there are no love letters, 'betrays itself in everything she ever wrote to or about him.' Miss Ashton develops, too, with a woman's understanding, the relationships between Dorothy and the other women in the story: Mary Hutchinson who married Wordsworth; Sara her younger sister, who appropriated Coleridge; and the other Sara, Coleridge's wife.
