In the land of Iron DRagons, human can no longer rely on sailing ships to get their goods to market: the sea dragons have become too menacing, taking even a prince of the realm in their campaign of mayhem. Since the sea is too undependable, there is only one option: the land route, across a virgin continent that no one has traversed - and survived. So it is decided that a new technology of magic will be harnessed, and an elven engineer and an unorthodox human magic user will be allowed to see their crazy theories in practice. Reluctantly working together, they come up with many unworkable prototypes until they devise a viable Iron Dragon. It feeds on iron ingots, and it will take them by rail across the vast continent... If they can make it through impenetrable forests, unending plains - and a mountain full of trolls.
