An excellent copy of this book. There is slight edge wear to the top of spine of the dust jacket, otherwise dj in excellent condition. "The greatest instrument of moral good," wrote Shelley, "is the imagination." In this original book Professor Walsh discusses the bearing of imaginative literature upon educational theory: he believes that liberal education, as opposed to merely academic or technical education, can only be achieved through the right use of imagination as an instrument. He reminds us of the valuable things Coleridge said about the child's mind, the moral world of childhood, and the education of teachers. He examines Keats' contribution to the training of the sensibility, and D. H. Lawrence's searching criticism of educational practice and assumption. There is much closely-attentive literary criticism here, but it is always directed towards the basic question - how best can we bring out the best in each of us? The Use of Imagination will be of particular interest to teachers whether in Universities, Colleges or Schools, and to student-teachers too; but it can be recommended to anyone interested in literary criticism.
