The more descriptive aspects of the field, long associated with the older idea of biology as natural history, have been complimented and even overshadowed by the wealth of knowledge revealed by the penetrating probes of molecular biology. To cover the descriptive and historical aspects of biology while explaining the biochemical and molecular approaches of recent years imposes a daunting challege. This, however, has been the aim of this book, and understanding and appreciation of contemporary biology.
